From the dean

The challenges of a rapidly advancing, technology-based society create immense opportunities for engineering students of the 21st century. The goal of the Pratt School of Engineering is to provide a distinguished education for our students, preparing them to lead rewarding lives as leaders who create waves of innovation in industry, academia, and government.

Our four interdisciplinary strategic research initiatives include Photonics, focused on integrating photonic materials and devices into all-optical networking and computing testbeds; Bioengineering, which will link the intellectual and infrastructure resources of Duke's world-class Biomedical Engineering Department and Medical Center in engineering human health; Materials, an initiative that seeks to exploit nanoscale length materials in new devices to achieve significant material gains; and our newest, Environmental Engineering.

Our interdisciplinary focus programs range from integrating science and technology to protect public health and the environment to high performance computing such as neuroengineering, micro/macro structural engineering, advanced structures, and entrepreneurship, in collaboration with the Fuqua School of Business, the School of Medicine, and the Medical Center. In addition to the strategic initiatives and focus programs, the School has nine centers and four departments.

I invite you all to stay connected to engineering at Duke. As always, you can keep up with news and events through our website (www.pratt.duke.edu) and our monthly newsletter, the Pratt Press http://www.pratt.duke.edu/pratt_press.
