As is true of any strong graduate. program, your attraction to Duke will largely derive from the strength of faculty in your desired area of study. From a slightly broader perspective, however, graduate students at the Pratt School derive considerable benefit from a highly collaborative and vibrant surrounding infrastructure, including such features as an on-campus medical center, several university-wide research initiatives in which Pratt and our science departments systematically interact, and close proximity to the business and entrepreneurial resources of the Research Triangle Park. These relationships provide ongoing opportunities for intellectual growth, development of technical depth, and employment after graduate school.

We work hard to make our students feel part of a community of scholars that extends beyond their immediate research group. We do this partly through an aggressive first year fellowship structure for incoming students. Providing such fellowship opportunities gives students the time and flexibility to explore the breadth of their chosen discipline, to carefully choose an adviser, and to intelligently design their course of study.

We also create a range of opportunities such as seminars, workshops, social gatherings and networking events, and special departmental graduate course offerings designed to stimulate intellectual interaction throughout graduate study at Pratt. Such interactions are fueled in part by the active participation of both faculty and students in our research centers and laboratories and research groups.
