William T. Evans III E'44 passed away on November 14, 2007 at the age of 86.
Charles C. Braswell E'45, of Cary, died August 26, at Cary Wake Med Hospital. Charlie was loving husband, devoted father, caring grandfather and great-grandfather, and loyal friend. He believed in the ethic of hard work and enjoyed playing golf and bridge. He was dedicated to his church and proud of his country. In 1945 Mr. Braswell graduated as a Mechanical Engineer from Duke University. He retired from North Carolina State University as Director of the Physical Plant in 1988 and previously was Physical Plant Director at Appalachian State University. He was twice President of the Southeastern Regional Association of Physical Plant Directors and Administrators of Universities and Colleges from 1983-1984 and received its Meritorious Service Award. He was appointed to the first North Carolina Building Commission. Mr. Braswell was a member of Highland United Methodist Church and served on the Board of the Methodist Home for Children. He also was a member of McGregor Downs Country Club, the University Club at NCSU, and a past member of the Raleigh Host Lions Club.
Joseph Frisch E'46, a professor emeritus of mechanical engineering at the University of California, Berkeley, who was known as a pioneer in computer-aided design, died June 15, 2008 at his home in Berkeley after a prolonged illness. He was 87. Born in Vienna in 1921, Professor Frisch fled the Nazis in 1938. He arrived in America in 1940. He graduated from Duke University in 1946 and got a master's from UC Berkeley in 1950. A year later, he joined the Cal faculty, where he remained until retiring in the late 1980s. Professor Frisch is survived by his wife, daughter and two sons.
Nash M. Love E'46 died Saturday, May 24, 2008, at Cypress Glen Retirement Community at the age of 84. Mr. Love was a native of North Carolina, born in Albemarle. He worked as a locomotive fireman on the Norfolk Southern Railroad from March 1942 until January 1943 and was qualified to fire any type of steam locomotive. A veteran of WWII in the Pacific Theater, Mr. Love served aboard the attack transport USS President Jackson and was invited to attend Officer's Training at Duke University through the V-12 Program where he was commissioned in 1946 with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. After working as design engineer and chief engineer for Newcomb & Boyd and Wm. H. Singleton Co., Inc., respectively, he started his own company. From 1959 to 1990, he was president and then chairman of the board/CEO of Nash M. Love & Associates, a consulting engineering and facility planning company in Washington, DC. His work was well-known and well-respected, and his firm was responsible for over 600 new and retrofit projects including The National Gallery of Art, National Building Museum, Watergate Hotel and Apartments, U.S. Capitol, U.S. Supreme Court, National Archives, and the airport in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. In 1985, he and his family moved to Lake of the Woods, outside Fredericksburg, Va., and became co-founder of Riverside Dinner Theater in Fredericksburg. He and his wife have been very involved in the Methodist Church, helping in the planning and building of Aldersgate Methodist Church in Alexandria, and becoming active in their community churches. He is survived by his wife, Anne Henderson Love, his three children, Jennifer Love Brill and husband, Bruce, Allison Louise Vonn-Love and husband, Bryan, and Bruce Howard Love; four grandchildren, Michael Love, Jim Love, Katie Love and Jackson Pethtal, and one great-grandchild, Melanie Love. Mr. Love enjoyed playing golf, carving decoy waterfowl, boating and traveling the world. Together with his wife, he has seen and experienced most of the countries in the world.
William J. Scanlon E'45 passed away on April 26, 2008 at the age of 84.
Nash M. Love E'46 passed away on May 24, 2008 at the age of 84.

Fred W. Baldwin E'48 passed away on November 15, 2007 at the age of 85.
Louis M. Mesce E'48 passed away on June 9, 2008 at the age of 85.
Lloyd L. Brown E'49 passed away on February 13, 2008 at the age of 83.
George C. Dannals E'49 passed away on June 12, 2008. Born May 5, 1922, in Altoona, Pa., Mr. Dannals moved with his family to Winter Haven in January 1928. He got "sand in his shoes" in the early years and attended public schools in Winter Haven and graduated in May of 1939. He was hired by Citrus Experiment Station in Lake Alfred at the age of 17. Mr. Dannals joined the organized Naval Reserve in the summer of 1939 and was called to active duty in July 1941. The previous summer (1940), he served as a signalman on the USS NOA out of Key West. In the regular Navy he underwent boot training at Norfolk, Va., and moved up the ladder, achieving "chief" status in late 1944 and as part of the combat aircrew in Torpedo Squadron Twelve aboard the USS Saratoga. After discharge from the Navy in December 1945, George enrolled as a pre-engineering student at Stetson University. On June 5, 1947, he was married to Cortez (Corky) Tedder. In the fall of that same year, they moved to Durham, N.C., where George transferred to Duke University to complete his degree in electrical engineering. His professional career included Tennessee Valley Authority (1949-1951) as a carrier and load control electrical engineer, Redstone Arsenal, Huntsville, Ala., as a rocket development electrical engineer (1951-1954), one of the first Americans to work with Dr. von Braun and his group to develop and test fire the Redstone missile - the forerunner of our astronaut program, Radiation, Inc., (1954-1957) as a ground station data collection engineer, founding partner of Dynatronics, Inc. (1957-1964), and marketing/communications systems specialist at Page Communications, Washington, D.C. (1964-1966). The remainder of his career was spent as a business and engineering consultant (1966-1985). He was a longtime member of the Episcopal Church, serving on several vestries, diocesan boards and standing committees. His other philanthropic and volunteer involvements included Young Life (National Board of Trustees), Habitat for Humanity, Stetson University and Duke University. In January 1986, George made an unofficial round-the-world trip for Young Life and the Episcopal Church covering three continents and ten countries.

Royster M. Tucker, Jr. E'53 passed away on May 30, 2008 at Wake Forest University Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC at the age of 76.
Donald H. Baker E'56 passed away on April 5, 2008 at the age of 74.
Joe K. Matheson, Jr. E'57 passed away on April 7, 2008 at the age of 73.
Edgar C. Ballowe, Jr. E'60 passed away on February 18, 2008 at the age of 70.
Ghazi R. Qubein E'61 passed away on October 9, 2007.
Michael O. Wheeler E'65 passed away suddenly March 30, 2008. Mr. Wheeler was the retired president of L.M. Gear Company. He was a graduate of the Duke University School of Engineering and the University of Michigan School of Business. Mike served on the Pratt Board of Visitors for over 10 years before retiring from the Board in 2006. He was involved in the Grosse Pointe community as a president of the Grosse Pointe City Little League, past president of the Grosse Pointe South High School Dad's Club and was a member of the Hundred Club of Detroit. He enjoyed golf, tennis and platform tennis and many wonderful times with family and friends at the Grosse Point Yacht Club and the Country Club of Detroit. He was tremendously proud of his Swedish heritage and the great camaraderie it provided over the years. He is remembered by family and friends for his quick wit, enduring sense of humor and for the love and support he showed to all.
Gary W. Laws E'75 passed away on September 28, 2008 in Arlington, VA. At the time of his death, Gary was working as an electrical engineer for the U.S. government.
D. Gilbert Lee, Jr. E'78 passed away on February 1, 2008 at the age of 50.
Carolyn E. Newey E'83 passed away at UNC Women's Cancer Center Hospital in Chapel Hill on June 25, 2008 at the age of 47 after a courageous battle with Ovarian Cancer and a devastating stroke. She was born in McAllen, Texas on November 11, 1960, daughter of Shirley Wallace Newey and the late Daniel Hitchings Newey III. Carolyn graduated from Duke University with a BSE in Electrical Engineering. She received the Duke University President's Senior Leadership Award in 1983 in recognition of outstanding achievement and service in collegiate activities. Carolyn was initiated into Phi chapter of Zeta Tau Alpha at Duke in 1980. Starting shortly after her graduation in 1983, she began serving as an advisor to the undergraduate members of the chapter at Duke. In over 10 years in that position, she influenced the lives of hundreds of young women. Carolyn was an active member of the Research Triangle NC Alumnae Chapter of Zeta Tau Alpha, serving as president for the years 1994-1996. She participated in many charitable events and was a key member of the committee that raised several thousand dollars to design and donate a period 1880's dress to the NC Museum of History's traveling exhibit. She also held a national position with ZTA, serving for many years as the North Carolina coordinator for obtaining reference information on prospective members. While attending Duke University and upon graduation, Carolyn worked for Duke Medical Center in the Biomedical Laboratory and was instrumental in the design and development of modular patient monitoring equipment. In 1985, Carolyn worked as an electronics project engineer, designing satellite receivers for Avnet Development Labs/Channel Master. Then in 1990, she began her career at Microspace Communications Corporation until her death. At Microspace, Carolyn was Vice President and Director of Operations and Engineering. Carolyn was a member of The Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers. Her community involvement included The W.S.W. Investment Group, and The Possum Trackers, a branch of The Raleigh Quilting Guild. Carolyn's church home was St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, in Edinburg, TX. Carolyn's pride and joy was her love of quilting and spending time with her friends and family. She also enjoyed traveling, reading, exercising, yoga and was an avid Duke Blue Devil's basketball fan.
Anderson I. Chen E'88 passed away on April 30, 2008 at he age of 42.
1930's
Edgar E. Cayce E'39 reached the age of 90 on February 9, 2008. On February 18, 2008 his wife reached the age of 88. On June 13, 2008 they celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary. In 2008 the first book he ever wrote became one of the few books to remain in print every year for 40 years. The book, "Edgar Cayce on Atlantis", has sold over one million copies and has been reprinted in many foreign languages including, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Polish, Japanese and Hebrew.
1940's
Louis B. Close E'43 doesn't have much going on. July - August he spent time at The Peek-n-Peak Resort in Western, N.Y. Played some bad golf after many years and a few club championships. First wife, Marjorie, died in 1969. Second wife, Betty, is still putting up with him.
Vance B. Martin's E'43 wife passed away on June 3, 2008.
Martin H. Johnson E'44 has recently passed the 200,000 mark processing scrap tires into useful products like fish attractors, erosion controls, oyster and mussel substrates, walking paths, barriers, light weight back fill plus hundreds more. He has also produced more than 50,000 bottles of wine for his thirsty family and friends. He lives with his wife, Margaret Dennis, of 61 years in Elizabethton, TN.
William B. Gum E'45 and his wife, Constance, are well and happy in their retirement community and enjoying their first grandchildren, Nathan (4) and Megan (2).
Walter L. Ross E'46 recently wrote and published the book "Left of Center-Right on Track."
Muriel T. Williams E'46 is still around! (And fairly sound) She is glad to see Duke Engineering School really getting into many aspects of medicine and biology.
Guy L. Robbins E'49 would like you to know that the bottom half of him is wearing out but the top half is still functioning.
1950's
William B. Wilmer VI E'51 is recovering from a two-year illness and doing okay. He is unable to travel much. He is enjoying his daughters, granddaughters and great granddaughters. His boys and their families are doing fine. His wife is doing great after shoulder replacement. One of his grandsons is coming home from Iraq in a few days.
Daniel N. Cote E'52 retired in Galveston, TX.
Lewis T. Fitch E'54 is currently making music in USA and France on Bassoon, Guitar and Recorders.
James F. Girand E'59 was diagnosed with prostate cancer and had a radical prostatectomy in October 2008. Successive PSA tests have shown no sign of recurrence. Mr. Girand has created a web site: www.prostatecancerpatient.org whose purpose is to arm men with the information they need to discuss prostate issues with their doctors. Please view it and let him know your story. One in six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer! He continues to run and cycle and perform competitively in triathlons at the international level. See everyone at the 50th reunion.
1960's
C. Gary Gerst E'61 has been retired from his firm for some time but continues to remain active through his board service. Gary is Chairman of the Board of Henderson Global Mutual funds and also serves on the board of the Investment Company Institute. His not-for-profit boards include: Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Metropolitan Family Services (a large social service agency in Chicago) and is Chairman of the Board of Chicago Shakespeare Theater.
James J. Ebert E'61 had 9 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.

Admiral Grant T. Hollet, Jr. E'64 was appointed by Secretary of Defense to the Army Science Board. Grant continues as Senior Advisor and former Chairman/CEO of EaglePicher Technologies, a leading manufacturer of specialized and satellite power systems.
J. Stephen Simon E'65, director and senior vice president of Exxon Mobil Corporation, has announced his intention to retire effective May 31, 2008, after more than 40 years of service. Mr. Simon has been a member of the corporation's Board of Directors since January 2006 and a member of the Management Committee since December 2004. As senior vice president on the Management Committee, Mr. Simon has been responsible for ExxonMobil's petroleum refining and supply and chemicals manufacturing and marketing operations. Mr. Simon joined Exxon Company, U.S.A. in July 1967 and shortly thereafter began a two-year assignment in the United States Army. He returned to Exxon U.S.A. in July 1969 as a business analyst in the Baton Rouge refinery. During his career, Mr. Simon held a number of technical, supervisory and general management positions. These positions included manager, Baton Rouge refinery; executive assistant to the president of Exxon Corporation, New York; supply and transportation manager, Esso Europe, London; general manager, supply department, Exxon U.S.A., Houston; chief executive, Esso Caribbean and Central America, Coral Gables; president, Esso Italiano, Rome, and executive vice president, Exxon Company, International, New Jersey. Following the ExxonMobil merger, he was appointed president of ExxonMobil Refining & Supply Company and vice president of Exxon Mobil Corporation in December 1999. Mr. Simon has served on a number of local boards of voluntary organizations. He is a member of the Governance Committee of the National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering and is a member of the Board of Directors of the National Council. Mr. Simon has also served on the boards of the American Petroleum Institute and the National Association of Manufactures. He is a member of the Board of Visitors for Duke University's School of Engineering and a member of the President's Council. In addition, he is on the Kellogg Advisory Board of Northwestern University. A native of Columbia, Missouri, Mr. Simon holds a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering from Duke University and an MBA from Northwestern University.

Samuel P. Lapham E'68 retired from Aramco Services Company in Houston and has moved to Poniciana Florida, south of Kissimmee & Orlando.
Robert T. Summers E'68 is the President of The Tennessee Road Builders Association for 2008. Rab is currently President of Summers-Taylor Inc., a road construction firm doing business in Eastern TN, Western NC, and Southwest VA.
1970's
Paul S. Follansbee E'72 recently accepted the position of James F. Will Professor of Engineering Science at St. Vincent College in Latrobe, PA. This is the first fully endowed Chair at the college in the Herbert W. Boyer School of Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Computing.
E. John Saleeby E'72 is still V.P. of Strategic Initiatives for ABB, Inc. He is still looking for some Duke basketball tickets and has hope for football.
Alan D. Sherwood E'72 is Senior VP and Co-Founder at MedNet Solutions, Inc. and his company ranked #157 on Entrepreneur's Hot 500 List.
Thomas L. Richardson E'73 is a Senior Tunneling Engineer, CH2MHill. His son, Andrew, is a junior at Rochester University and his daughter, Julie, is a senior at Westfield Highschool.
Stuart "Skip" J. Heyman E'76 is getting ready to leave corporate America after 25 years at Ford and 5 at Northrop Grumman to become a pauper teaching high school math in Virginia Beach. Call it a mid-life crisis, a revelation or a calling-whatever it is, it's happening and he can't wait. Skip has to laugh when he looks back at all his engineering class notes because he can't believe he ever understood that stuff! Relearning trig and calc was a challenge!
Robert T. Crowder E'77 has been named Vice President of Gilbane Building Company. Bob is a 28-year veteran of the company and serves as district manager of Gilbane's Northern California Office. Crowder resides in Los Gatos, California, with his wife, Barbara, and two sons.
Roy K. Phelan E'77 has been named Chief Executive Officer of Inspiron Logistics llc. Inspiron is a high-tech startup that offers emergency text messaging services to universities, government agencies and corporations. Roy is happily living with his wife, Debbie, and raising his three children near Cleveland, Ohio.
Richard M. Prevatt III E'77 inducted his oldest son, Matthew, into the US Naval Academy on July 21, 2008. His company, Integrity Applications Incorporated (IAI) was selected again this year as on of the best small & medium sized companies to work for. They are blessed with great people.
Mark T. Sperberg E'79 leads a University Development program funded by Abu Dhabi's Sovereign Wealth Fund, Mubadala.
1980's
Richard C. Gaskins E'80, after 23 years of work in private law firms as an environmental attorney, has taken a job as Executive Director of the Catawba Riverkeeper Foundation. The mission of the Catawba Riverkeeper Foundation is to educate the public about the Catawba River, protect the river and advocate for the River. He lives in charlotte, NC with his wife Bronwyn, and two remaining children (Will and Joan) who have not left the nest. His oldest daughter (Helen) is in medical school at UNC; his second oldest daughter, Audrey, will graduate from Duke in May with a degree in Mechanical Engineering; and his third oldest daughter (Susan) is studying to be a stage manager at UNC-Greensboro.
Mary P. Jordan E'80 changed careers and spent six months as a professional sailboat race captain on a private yacht in the Caribbean (obtained her 100 ton license in 2006). She is currently back in Wisconsin looking for off-season adventures.
Murray R. Snyder E'82 is a captain in the U.S. Navy. A permanent military professor at the U.S. Naval Academy, he teaches fluid dynamics, thermodynamics and advanced mathematics. He resides in Clarksville, MD with his wife, Jessie Badillo, M.D., and two teenage boys, Mikkel and Zachary.
John L. Russell E'83 has a new role as VP of U.S. Sales for Boston Scientific's Cardiac Rhythm Management division. John continues to live in the Twin Cities of Minnesota with his wife Sara and his children, Elizabeth (14), Luke (11), Joe (9), Jessica (3) and William (3).
Kevin J. Fellhoelter E'84, G'86 married Elizabeth Dougal on May 3, 2008. Kevin is currently president/owner of Solara, Inc. He is active in IEEE Power Electronics Society serving on the Adcom as well as the APEC Steering Committee and the Intelec Adcom.
Rosalynn B. Ritts PhD E'84 has been named on the SEBIO Board of Directors.
Henry M. Quillian III E'85 still uses his Duke Engineering education daily in his construction and intellectual property litigation practice. This summer, his whole family enjoyed a visit with Dean Connie Simmons at the Engineering School as well as a tour of the rest of Duke. The Engineering School looks great! Any friend coming to or through Atlanta should give him a call. He would love to catch up.
Eric R. Meier E'86, CEO of Calypso Medical, was recently named Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year ® for 2008 in the Pacific North west. He received this award in the category of Health Care Life Sciences. The Entrepreneur of the Year Award honors entrepreneurs who show great success and excel in their industry.
Mark M. Murray E'86, G'97, G'99 was promoted to Associate Professor at The United States Naval Academy.
Stephen J. Cahill E'87 was promoted t o the position of Engineering Manager for the Crystal River Nuclear Power Plant, a Progress Energy Facility, in the summer of 2007. Stephen joined Progress Energy in April 2006, after 15 years with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, a federal government agency. Progress Energy is in the midst of a significant power up rate to the Crystal River Plant as well as pursuing two new nuclear plants in a neighboring county.
Christine J. Hunter E'89 and her husband, Jairy, would like to announce the birth of their second child, Ella Chapel, on January 14, 2008.
1990's

Sean manages Allburn Financial Consulting of Davenport & Company.
James R. Stalder E'90, his wife, Gina, and their three children are moving to Fort Worth, TX. Jim is the new Chief Information Officer of Leprechaun, LLC, a healthcare technology company servicing the needs of the healthcare payer and provider industries. Jim was most recently the Chief Information Officer at Mercy Health Services, a $500M hospital system in Baltimore, MD.
Michael S. O'Leary E'91 and his wife, Beth T'92, are happy to announce the birth of their third child, Elizabeth "Libby" O'Leary. The couple is very excited, especially Libby's two older brothers, Ryan and Michael, Jr.
Timothy R. Davis E'92 and his wife, Ruth, celebrated the birth of their second daughter, Rieka Judith Jacqueline Davis, on May 27, 2008. Their first daughter, Alexa Birgitta Cornelia Davis, was born October 5, 2006.
Valecia D. Maclin E'92 was honored at the 2008 Black Engineer of the Year Awards Conference (BEYA). The Black Engineer of the Year Awards recognizes individuals who have achieved exceptional career gains in government and industry, in lifetime achievement, and in other pioneering feats.
Michael L. Guhl E'93 and his wife, Joan, would like to announce the birth of their 3rd child, and first son, John Christopher (Jack) Guhl on February 24, 2008.
Margaret Best Rodgers E'93 and John P. Rodgers E'92 welcomed their third child and second daughter, Mirabel Genevieve Rodgers, on May 21, 2008.

Stefan A. Dyckerhoff E'94 was promoted to Vice President & General Manager at Cisco Systems. He is keeping busy as his third child turned 1 year old and he is in the process of building a house in Palo Alto, CA.

R. Reid Bailey E'95 and his wife, Elaine Thomas Bailey T'96, would like to announce the birth of their son, Linwood Reid Bailey, on July 17, 2007. He is the couple's second child (big sister Julia was born in '04). Reid is an Assistant Professor in the Systems and Information Engineering Department at the University of Virginia. Elaine received her Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Arizona in 2006. She is currently completing a postdoctoral fellowship in sleep research at the University of Virginia. They live in Charlottesville, VA.

Heather B. Harries E'95 recently started as Program Manager at HeartWare, Inc., which is a start up manufacturing LVAD's (Left Ventricular Assist Devices) in Miami Lakes, FL.

Captain William W. May, Jr. E'95 is a major in the Army and earned a MBA from Georgetown's business school in May 2007. He's now working in the Army Budget Office at the Pentagon. His wife, Rachel E. May T'95 had baby number 7, Joseph Damien, on April 7, 2008.
Bradley E. Paris E'95 and his wife, Robyn Paris T'95, would like to announce the birth of their daughter, Avery Elizabeth, born on March 29, 2008.

Hartzell E'98 has been appointed to the Board of Directors for the Coalition of Women's Initiatives in Law Firms, a non-profit association whose mission is to find and share efficient and effective methods to enhance the retention and promotion of women lawyers and provide support for women's initiatives in law firms.
Shuchi Shah E'98 and her husband, Mark L. Arey, MD celebrated the birth of their first child, Mikaela Cameron Arey, on March 4, 2008, in Irving, Texas. Shah is currently a fellow in pediatric endocrinology at Children's Medical Center, Dallas, and will be relocating to Tampa, Florida, following the completion of her training this summer.

Priya Ramaswami Baraniak E'01 married Andrew Paul Baraniak G'06 on August 21, 2008. They are currently residing in Atlanta, GA. Priya received her PhD in Bioengineering from the University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA. Her dissertation was titled: Controlled Release From a Biodegradable Elastomer For Applications in Cardiovascular Regenerative Medicine. She is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the Georgia Institute of Technology.
Stephanie L. Spalding E'01 married Steven J. Cook on November 3, 2007 on St. Simons Island, Georgia. The happy couple resides in Newport News, Virginia.

Cameron joined Mars & Co's Greenwich, CT office as an Associate Consultant following his graduation and has worked on strategic engagements for several of Mars & Co's global clients.

Justin C. Brower E'05 would like to announce the birth of his daughter, Ayslee McKenna Brower, on March 15, 2008.
Tilden Hagan E'05 is currently working out of Greensboro for his mother Kay Hagan who is running for U.S. Senate in N.C. She had a five-candidate primary in which she took over 60% of the vote.
William L. Hwang E'06 received his MSc by research in chemistry from The University of Oxford. He was selected a 2008 Paul and Daisy Soros Fellow and received full MSTP funding for the Harvard-MIT MD/PhD program, where he will matriculate in July 2008. While in Oxford, William met the love of his life, Katie N. Lee, and got engaged in April 2008.
Andrew R. Schmidt E'06 has been promoted to Senior Associate Consultant at Mars & Co, a management consulting firm specializing in business strategy. Andrew joined Mars and Co's Greenwich, CT office as an Associate Consultant following his graduation and has worked on strategic engagements for several of Mars & Co's global clients in both the US and Europe. He recently completed a major project in Moscow where he learned more than a little Russian!
