I'm writing to share very gratifying news. Today the U.S. News & World Report magazine will post rankings for engineering graduate schools and Duke has moved up 3 more spots to number 28. Pratt has moved seven spots in the past three years, rising farther faster than any other school in the nation. The upward ascent is a reflection of many things but most significantly our growth in research funding, Ph.D. students and graduate student selectivity, as well as a rise in peer and recruiter...
Dear Pratt Community,
I open today’s memo with an invitation to our students: come to a party! We are partnering with the President’s Council on Jobs and Competitiveness and Intel corporation to help launch the Engineering: Stay With It campaign. Our goal is to help the United States graduate 10,000 engineers each year. And you are the most important part of this effort.
Dear Pratt Community,
I write today to share sad news. As some of you may have heard, our colleague Professor Piotr Marszalek lost his son Filip Kamil Marszalek, 25, through a tragic accident late last week.
Piotr, his wife and other son are planning a small, private family service for tomorrow. At this point, they do not anticipate holding an open public service. Filip made the decision in life to be an organ donor, and I understand that several individuals have received an organ gift....
I love it when I get to boast about faculty members from all four departments at the same time, and today is one of those opportunities.
Dear Pratt Community,
Welcome to the spring 2012 semester. I want to share the latest news and accomplishments about our faculty and staff today.
Dear Pratt Faculty and Staff,
I’m writing to communicate our progress to date on the school-wide priorities I shared with you in the fall faculty meeting and staff open forum. As you may recall, we categorized the broad themes of our planning objectives by the headings Energy Initiative, Entrepreneurship Initiative, Growth and Pratt School Culture.
Dear Pratt Community,
With great sadness, I report that Pratt research engineer Ned Light lost his battle with cancer on Friday, December 16. His family will be holding a memorial service for Ned on Monday January 9, at 2:00 p.m. in the Duke University Chapel. A reception will follow in the von der Heyden Pavilion, located adjacent to the Bostock Library on West Campus.
Dear Pratt Community,
As we wind down on finals week of a terrific semester, I want to take a moment to recognize some of the great accomplishments of our students, faculty and alumni.
Memo from the Dean 11/22/11
Dear Pratt Community,
Dear Pratt Community,
We had a very successful Board of Visitors Meeting last week, and dedicated the new awards wall for members of the National Academy of Engineering. Sponsored by Pratt’s Board of Visitors and Faculty Development Committee members, Seth Watkins, Bob Anderson, Tom Burger, Stefan Dyckerhoff, Dave Pratt, and Betsy Sechrest, the awards wall includes Duke alumni and faculty who have been elected to the Academy.
I want to thank everyone who attended the 2nd Annual Abhijit Mahato Memorial Envisioning the Invisible image contest awards event last week. More than 80 people attended, and we had 83 entries this year. The winning entries are now hanging in the Fitzpatrick Center atrium and available online at: http://mahato.pratt.duke.edu/. I encourage everyone to take a moment to appreciate the artistry that went into these images.
Dear Pratt Community,
I’m writing to ask you to help the Duke engineering community celebrate a wonderful success. The National Science Foundation has awarded a six-year, $13.6 million grant to establish the Triangle Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC), led by Duke biomedical engineering Professor Gabriel Lopez. We’re holding an informal kickoff celebration on Tuesday, September 27th at 3:30 p.m. in the Fitzpatrick Center atrium. Free t-shirts to the first 100 people who...
Dear Pratt Community,
Now that everybody is moved in and settled into classes and labs again, I want to welcome everyone to the fall 2011 semester.
Dear Pratt Community,
I’m pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Lawrence Carin as Chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) effective September 1, 2011. Larry brings tremendous gravitas and fresh ideas to the chair position and has universal support from the faculty for his chairmanship.
He will take over for a three-year term from interim chair John Board, who has been kind enough to oversee the department’s administration during our transition....
Dear Pratt Community,
Thank you to everyone who made the E-lympics event last Friday such a great morning of fun. We had a good turnout of grad students, staff, and a couple of faculty members for the morning of competitions and lunch buffet. There were stunning displays of athleticism, strategy, and Murphy’s Law; I haven’t laughed so hard in a long time.
Dear Pratt Community,
I’m writing to announce that Professor Craig Henriquez has been appointed to a three-year term as chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering effective December 1, 2011. Craig will take over the department’s administration from George Truskey, who now serves as senior associate dean for research at the Pratt School.
Dear Pratt Community,
We’re more than halfway through the summer break and already gearing up for fall classes with classroom scheduling and processing the many reservations for the Schiciano Auditorium. I understand that we will have roughly 344 freshmen joining our ranks at orientation in August.
I wanted to do a “catch up” memo, highlighting some of the great faculty news that has come in over the past month or so and sharing some summer travel notes.
Dear Pratt Community,
I’m writing today to announce that Marianne Hassan, associate dean for research advancement and new initiatives, will be leaving the Pratt School effective July 1 to pursue the next phase of her career.
